2026 Hair-Pulling Crisis: Is an Immediate Rule Change Necessary After Three Red Cards?

Hair-Pulling Under Fire: Is Football’s Latest Red Card Trend Out of Control?

Move over offsides and handballs—VAR has found a new obsession: hair pulling. The latest casualty is Sunderland defender Dan Ballard, who was sent off during a 1-1 draw against Wolves. The 24th-minute incident involved a tangle with Nigeria striker Tolu Arokodare. While referee Paul Tierney originally ignored the clash, a VAR intervention forced a monitor check that ended in a straight red.

Ballard is the third player this season to be dismissed for this offense, following Everton’s Michael Keane and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez. Interestingly, the Super Eagles forward Arokodare has been the victim in two of these three cases. With previous appeals by United and Everton failing to overturn the three-game bans, Sunderland faces a grim outlook.

The core of the outrage lies in how the rules are written. Currently, hair pulling falls under Violent Conduct, meaning it is legally treated with the same severity as a punch or a headbutt. Sunderland manager Regis le Bris argued that defending against strikers with long hair is becoming a “grey area,” where accidental contact is being punished as intentional violence.

Football legends are also weighing in. Wayne Rooney called the situation “ridiculous” on Match of the Day, demanding an immediate change to the law. Former keeper Joe Hart added that punishing players for the physical nature of a duel “doesn’t make any sense.”

Experts like former referee Darren Cann suggest a middle ground: moving hair pulling into its own category—much like biting or spitting—to allow for a “sliding scale” of punishment. This would let officials distinguish between a malicious pull and an accidental grab during an aerial challenge. As VAR continues to put every physical interaction under the microscope, the pressure is on IFAB and PGMOL to fix a rule that many believe is breaking the game.
