Jean-Philippe Mateta holds private talks over new deal
Crystal Palace and Jean-Philippe Mateta have held talks about extending the French forward contract at Selhurst Park.
The French forward was linked with several transfers in the summer, including a move to Manchester United. However, Palace were able to hold on to their prized asset as well as club captain Marc Guehi who was linked with Liverpool.
Mateta, 28, still has 18 months remaining on his deal in south London, but the Eagles want to act amid ‘growing interest in the striker.
According to Sky Sports, Palace have yet to come to an agreement with Mateta. However, the FA Cup champions remain calm over his situation.
Last month, Mateta was asked whether he would like to join an ‘elite’ club. He told RMC Sport : “It’s natural, every ambitious player wants to reach that milestone.
“Especially when you arrive in the national team and around you, there are only players who play in the Champions League, who win the biggest trophies. When you play surrounded by the best players in the world, naturally you want to reach that milestone.”
Manchester United reportedly held talks with Mateta’s representatives earlier this year but ultimately decided to sign Benjamin Sesko.
Palace were reported to be holding out for £40million for their star striker and Mateta was said to be considering his future.
After a slow start to life in the Premier League, Mateta has bagged 16 and 14 goals in the previous two seasons to build his reputation as one of the top strikers in the division.
The France international has scored six goals in 11 games this season and has scored twice in his first three caps for Les Bleus.
