Premier League decide Man United appeal for Bruno Fernandes red card
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was given his marching order in the dying minute of first half during the Red Devils home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Fernandes was given a straight red in the 42nd minute after bringing down James Madison. Though replays showed it wasn’t a studs-up challenge, with the Portuguese instead catching him with the back of his ankle, referee saw it as a dangerous tackle.
After the match, Fernandes himself insisted it was never a red card offence, resulting in United to lodge an appeal.
United have now stated that they have won their claim of wrongful dismissal.
A statement from the club read: “Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.
“The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 29 September.
“Fernandes was set to miss our league fixtures against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham, but will now be available for selection following the successful appeal.”
Fernandes’ red card was the first of his United career on what was his 242nd appearance. The Portugal international will be eager to put the disappointment behind him and help United get back to winning ways.
