Ex-Liverpool man refuses to play for his German team, set to face ‘consequences’

Naby Keita

Former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita refused to play for Werder Bremen against Bayer Leverkusen and he’s set to face the consequences.

Werder Bremen played Bayern Leverkusen on Sunday with Xabi Alonso‘s men securing a 5-0 win to cement their first Bundesliga title.

Missing in action for Werder Bremen was Keita.

While fans believed it was a tactical decision, the club confirmed that Keita refused to play.

Werder Bremen managing director revealed that  Naby Keita opted not to play when he learnt he will be starting from the bench.

The German club shared Fritz’s comments on X, formerly known as Twitter: “After Naby found out yesterday that he would not be playing from the start, he decided not to get on the bus but to go home. We will talk to him and his agent tomorrow about the consequences and how to proceed.”

Keita spent five years at Anfield, winning a handful of major honours, including the Premier League and Champions League.

The 29-year-old signed for Werder Bremen after reaching the end of his Liverpool contract last summer. It’s left to be seen how Keita will be dealt by the German club.
