NEW YORK — In one of the most severe disciplinary actions in NBA history, the league has handed down massive penalties to the Los Angeles Clippers following a comprehensive year-long investigation into salary-cap circumvention involving star forward Kawhi Leonard.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced the ruling, which strips the franchise of five consecutive first-round draft picks, levies a $30 million fine against the organization, and issues lengthy suspensions to key leadership figures.
The Independent Investigation Findings
The penalties stem from a rigorous probe conducted by the New York law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, which investigated how Leonard allegedly received impermissible off-court income.
According to the league’s report, the Clippers orchestrated a “pattern of misconduct” by actively initiating and facilitating lucrative endorsement deals between Leonard and corporate partners doing active business with the team—most notably the bankrupt financial firm Aspiration, alongside Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance. Investigators concluded that the franchise induced these companies to enter agreements by offering them team business, effectively bypassing collectively bargained salary-cap rules.
Severe Fallout for Ownership and Front Office
The repercussions hit the upper echelons of the franchise immediately. The Clippers owner was suspended from all league and team activities for one year after investigators found he knowingly sought to help secure off-court income for Leonard and approved conditional business agreements. The President of Business Operations received a one-year suspension without pay for being directly culpable for the endorsement structures and providing misleading statements to investigators. The President of Basketball Operations was slapped with a six-month suspension without pay for his involvement and for approving impermissible personal expenses for Leonard’s family.
