Manchester United are reportedly edging closer to signing Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha this summer – but they face stiff competition from Newcastle United.

United have struggled for form this season and the club is expected to wave goodbye to some players during the summer. The Red Devils are also prepared to bring in new players with Cunha a top target.

Latest report from The Daily Mail has now claimed that United need to activate the Brazilian’s £62.5 million ($83m) release clause but are hopeful of agreeing terms in May.

Newcastle United have been credited with interest in the 25-year-old but he may have been swayed by the prospect of joining the Red Devils instead.

The report adds that if the Premier League giants signed the former Atletico Madrid man, they would be able to stay in line with the division’s profit and sustainability rules as well but player exits may be needed to fuel other transfer moves.

While Cunha is on to of United’s wish list, the reports added that United also want to sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap this summer but face increasing competition from Chelsea to sign the 22-year-old, who is said to have a £30m ($40m) release clause.
