Chelsea Captain Reece James Out for Three Months Following Knee Surgery
LONDON — Chelsea FC have confirmed that captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery after sustaining an injury during a training session. The 26-year-old England international is expected to be sidelined for around three months, ruling him out of action until early 2027.
The setback occurred in training ahead of Chelsea’s recent 5-1 home victory over Bournemouth. Following specialist assessments, medical staff determined that surgical intervention was the necessary course of action to resolve the issue.
Official Statement & Manager’s Response
Chelsea officially announced the news on Friday morning:
“Those assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action. Reece has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase.”
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Everton, manager Xabi Alonso addressed the blow while refusing to put a strict deadline on his captain’s return:
“We wanted to be cautious and wait to know the result of the tests, but now the surgery has gone well and has been successful… We don’t set timelines, but he will be out for several weeks.”
“He’s still a very important player. He’s the captain; he’s a great influence… We have Moi (Caicedo), Levi (Colwill); we have players that take that responsibility, and they fill the role in a perfect way.”
