Cristiano Ronaldo creates football history, becomes first player to do so
Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved yet another record in his glittering career by scoring his 900th goal for club and country.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest football players in history, Ronaldo was on target against Croatia in the Nations League on Thursday night. In the process, he became the first man in history to reach the astonishing figure.
Ronaldo’s latest strike also saw his goals tally for Portugal rise to 131 goals. This figure puts him ahead of long-time rival Lionel Messi on the all-time goalscoring charts.
Ronaldo sits in first place by some distance, with Messi in second on 838 goals from 1069 games.
The Portuguese forward 900th goal of his career came in the 34th minute at the Estadio do Benfica. Ronaldo volleyed home from close range to make it 2-0 to the hosts after getting on the end of Nuno Mendes’ whipped in cross.
Ronaldo was criticized for his performance during Euro 2024 with fans insisting it’s time he steps away from international duty.
However, the former Real Madrid forward has proved his doubters wrong.
Ronaldo has revealed his intentions of scoring 1000 goals before retiring and it’s left to see if he will be able to achieve this huge milestone.
Speaking to former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel, Ronaldo declared he wants to hit the magical mark of 1,000 goals.
“If I don’t have any injuries, this for me is the most important, I want that,” Ronaldo said.
“For me, the best mark that I can have in football is to reach, first, 900 goals. After, my challenge is to be at 1,000 goals.”
