Erik ten Hag compensation fee revealed as Man United seek for new manager

Manchester United are on the lookout for a new manager after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday morning following a run of poor form.

United’s defeat to West Ham United on Sunday was the melting point the board needed to decide Ten Hag’s faith.

A statement from the club read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was Ten Hag’s assistant, will now take over as interim manager.

Despite walking out of the exit door, Ten Hag is set to receive a huge severance fee.

As reported by The Athletic, the full details of Ten Hag’s severance package are not known but it has been claimed that it could be as much as £16 million.

The report stated: “Ten Hag had 21 months remaining on his extended United deal and it has been widely reported previously that the 54-year-old earned £9million ($11.9m) a year, a sum trimmed by the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League this season.”

Jose Mourinho and his staff reportedly received £19.6 million when he was sacked in 2018 while Dutchman Louis van Gaal and his coaches were paid £8.4 million when he was sacked in 2016 after winning the FA Cup.

United have reportedly list out top managers like Xavi Hernandez, Gareth Southgate, Thomas Frank and Julian Nagelsmann as their preferred replacement.
