Fermin Lopez reveals why he rejected Chelsea move

Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has revealed why he shunned the move to Chelsea during the transfer window to continue his adventure at the Spanish giant.

Fermin Lopez’s future at Barcelona was under the spotlight during the final weeks of the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old attracted strong interest from Chelsea, but in the end, he chose to stay with the reigning La Liga champions.

And less than 24 hours after the transfer window closes, Fermin has spoken out about the saga. During an interview with MD, he revealed that his plan was always to remain as a Barcelona player, although he did appreciate the interest that Chelsea showed in him.

“Well, in the end my priority has always been to be at Barça. I arrived when I was 12 years old, it was my dream to be here, to be able to reach the first team. It’s always a compliment that there is interest from other clubs, but the truth is that I always had the idea of staying at Barça and being able to succeed here.

“Not only this week, since I arrived in the first team I have felt very loved by the Catalans. It is grateful that for them he is an important player for Barça.”

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick had earlier stated he wanted Fermin to stay – and that he was convinced he would do so.

Flick’s admission seems to play a key role in Fermin’s decision. According to the young midfielder, the feeling of being wanted by those within Barca played a big part in his decision not to seek a move to Chelsea.

“It’s been very important, because I’ve always fought to be here, to play for Barça. My idea is to stay here. You know that in football you never know and there are things that don’t depend on you, but my priority has always been to stay at Barça.”
