Harry Kane becomes first English player to hit new Champions League record

Published on

Harry Kane became the first English player to hit 50 Champions League goals, as he scored twice in Bayern Munich’s comprehensive victory over Atalanta.

Bayern secured a 10-2 aggregate win. The Bundesliga giants set up a mouth-watering quarter-final against Real Madrid, following up their 6-1 victory in Bergamo with a 4-1 home success at the Allianz Arena.

Kane hit the first two, a retaken penalty and a brilliantly worked second, to bring up his half-century in 66 games and take his season’s tally to 47.

Lennart Karl and Luis Diaz added to the scoring as Bayern racked up double figures for the tie, before a late consolation for Lazar Samardzic.

Despite Bayern injury problems, the Bundesliga giant were able to get a positive result against Atalanta.

16-year-old goalkeeper Leonard Prescott was named on the bench as Bayern were able to call on Jonas Urbig, cleared for duty after recovering from a blow to the head.

There were outfield changes too, headlined by the return of Kane as central striker and captain.

Kane seized the moment to create history as he hopes to continue the good form both in Europe and domestically.

Kane now has 50 Champions League goal in 66 appearance. Only two players have achieved the feat quicker in the history of the tournament.

Ruud van Nistelrooy previously held the record after doing so in 62 appearances.

However, his benchmark was surpassed by Erling Haaland back in September as he scored his 50th goal on only his 49th outing. The England international draws level with Lionel Messi as the third-fastest to do so.

The all-time leading scorer in Champions League history, Cristiano Ronaldo, needed 91 appearances to reach 50 goals, though.

Ronaldo went on to score 140 times in 183 appearances in the competition for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
