Manchester City forward Jack Grealish has insisted that being left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad is the most difficult thing he have had to deal with in his career.

Grealish was left out of Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad for Euro 2024 despite playing in a 3-0 friendly win over Bosnia-Herzegovina at St James’ Park a week before the tournament started.

The former Aston Villa star has now opened up on his heartache at missing out but says he is determined to use that profound disappointment as fuel to rediscover his best form and prove his doubters wrong this season.

“When you are on your holidays, every time you turn on the phone or the TV you just see it [the tournament] so it was hard not to see,” Grealish said.

“I’ll be honest, football-wise it was the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to deal with in terms of my own career.

“I was absolutely heartbroken. For myself now moving forward, I have to just try and use that as motivation going into this season.”

‘I’ll try and have the same mentality I had two years ago’

Grealish spent his summer training and believes the two-week head start he has on those still away following international duty will stand him in good stead as he bids to overcome the pain of his England snub and a disappointing last season at City.

“It’s down to me at the end of the day,” said City’s record £100 million signing. “I need to train well and prepare well and I know I’ll be at my best.

“I’ll try and have the same mentality I had two years ago. My first season at City I don’t think I performed as well as I could. The second [season] I played a lot of games. I wanted to come back stronger.”
