Jordan Henderson ruled out of World Cup after freak injury

Published on

Jordan Henderson will reportedly miss the remainder of the FIFA World Cup after suffering an injury while celebrating England’s win over Mexico.

The former Liverpool midfielder fell over the hoardings while celebrating England’s victory and injured his wrist. He left the pitch on a stretcher while receiving oxygen before being taken straight to hospital.

The incident occurred just minutes after England secured a 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

England’s players celebrated the victory by singing with supporters in the stand behind the goal.

However, after singing “Wonderwall” and other England anthems, Henderson took a tumble. He was seen tripping over the hoardings as he attempted to re-enter the pitch before being surrounded by his teammates.

The medical team was called to attend to Henderson, who received treatment on the pitch. He eventually left on a stretcher while receiving oxygen.

He was taken to hospital due to his injuries and will not travel back to Kansas City with the rest of the squad.

According to The Athletic, Henderson’s World Cup is over as he requires surgery on the wrist injury he suffered in the fall.

The Brentford midfielder will not feature again in the tournament, with England next in action against Norway on Saturday.

England captain Harry Kane provided a brief update on the incident in his post-match interview.

He said: “Hendo just fell over there. I think he’s okay. Something to do with his arm.”

Jude Bellingham, who scored two goals against Mexico at the Azteca, offered a little more insight.

The Real Madrid star said: “He’s in a bit of bother, but our medical team have got it under control.

“Everyone was there to support him, and even that was something beautiful to see.”

England will now face Norway in the quarter-finals without Henderson. The Three Lions are scheduled to play on Saturday, July 11.
