Liverpool manager Arne Slot has shared new update about the club transfer plan just weeks after missing out on signing Martin Zubimendi.

Real Sociedad midfielder Zubimendi appeared set for an Anfield switch for around £51m. However, the Spain international’s club launched a late charm offensive which succeeded in keeping him at Anoeta.

Having missed out on their top target, Slot has now insisted that the club will push forward with their current squad, while recognizing movements continue to be made behind the scenes.

“I said many times already our squad is really strong so it is not easy to find players to strengthen. Zubimendi was one but he chose not to come here so we go forward with the one we have,” the Liverpool boss said. “We’re in a good place and Richard [transfer chief Richard Hughes] is trying to improve the squad in the background.

“Zubimendi didn’t want to come and Richard tried everything. We kept the same team but lost Thiago, Joel [Matip] and Adrian and you always talk about transfers but we have a positive team already.”

Liverpool were busy in the transfer market last summer, adding four midfielders in a significant overhaul. Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch were all brought on board.

However, Slot who took over at Anfield at the start of the summer after Jurgen Klopp ended his nine-year spell at the helm is yet to bring in any player this summer.

Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
