Napoli set unwanted Serie A record after shambolic 2023/24 campaign
Napoli won the 2022/23 Seria A season in an emphatic manner but failed to build on that success in the 2023/24 season.
Having failed to impress all season, Napoli failed to beat Lecce on the final Serie A matchday, drawing 0-0 at the Diego Maradona Stadium on Sunday.
The goalless draw against Lecce saw Napoli finish the current Seria A season 10th in the standings, a whopping 41 points behind new champions Inter.
Napoli won their first Seria A title in 33 years last season but this seasons’ failure also saw them set an unwanted record. Napoli replicated an unwanted feat set by Milan 27 years ago.
In 1996/97, the Rossoneri had to settle for an 11th-place finish as the reigning Scudetto holders. That negative record long stood the test of time before the Partenopei matched it in 2023/24.
Napoli will not be part of Europe next season. It will be the first time in 15 years that the southern giants will not compete in a major European competition.
This looks more shambolic knowing nine places could guarantee a continental promotion. Ninth-placed Torino will qualify for Europe while Napoli will have to settle for a rebuilding process.
Napoli are expected to let go of some big players with the likes of Victor Osimhen currently linked with a summer move.
The Italian club are also looking for a new manager with their president Aurelio De Laurentiis doing his best to convince Antonio Conte to take charge of his struggling club.
