Better than Raya’s: Onana receives accolade over spectacular save against Palace
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been praised for his impressive double save against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Erik ten Hags’ earned a point after a stalemate at Selhurst Park but it was Onana who earned the plaudits for keeping the opposition at bay with a wonderful save in the second half.
Onana has now received praise from Peter Schmeichel who believes his double save was better than David Raya’s superb midweek stop.
Raya produced a remarkable save for Arsenal in the Champions League in midweek, but Schmeichel believes that Onana’s stop deserves even more plaudits.
‘It’s the second week running that he has earned a point for his team,’ the former United keeper told Premier League productions.
‘That double save, we saw Raya from that penalty save which was unbeliavable, but I think this is more difficult
‘The shot is through the legs of [Mattijs] De Ligt so he sees it late so that’s a great save in itself.
‘But that recovery to get back up and he even gets a bit of a stretch on his arms – it’s a magnificent save and that has saved a point for the team.’
Meanwhile, Onana after the match failed to dwell on his heroics save as he lamented his side dropping another more points away from home.
‘I don’t think it [the save] is so important because we didn’t win,’ he told Sky Sports.
‘We are such a big club. When we move somewhere, we have the ambition to try to win. We didn’t win but I’m happy for the work, the sacrifice of my team-mates because I think we were better than them.
‘We had so many chances but unfortunately, we didn’t score. It’s difficult to come back with one point when we deserved to win.’
He continued: ‘I think we were better than them, I think we were way better than them. We had more chances than them. We had the best chances during the game. Of course, they are a very good team, but we were way better than them.’
