Spain vs Argentina ‘Finalissima’ clash under threat

Published on

The much anticipated match between Spain and Argentina is still expected to go ahead in Qatar despite growing concern over conflict in the Middle East.

It’s been days of commotion in the middle East after Iran fired missiles at their close neighbours following the USA’s decision to strike.

This incident has seen football in the Middle East country brought to a swift halt. The ‘Finalissima’ between Argentina and Spain is due to take place in Lusail on March 27.

However, it still appears that Spain chiefs are still keen for the game to take place and have not been told otherwise as of yet by any of the governing bodies. Spanish FA general secretary Alvaro De Miguel said: “The situation there is worrying, but the Finalissima is not suspended.

Qatar has informed us that it has suspended its competitions until further notice, but that does not mean this match is suspended. We have our sporting plans to play against Argentina and Egypt. We maintain that desire, although it is true that we have to wait.

“It is premature to make a diagnosis regarding whether the match will be played or whether it will be played in Qatar or not.

“We will hold working meetings with UEFA and [South American confederation] CONMEBOL to assess the real scope of the conflict and see how we manage this match.

“It is premature to make an assessment, but this week will be decisive in knowing what will happen with this match. We need to have the guarantee that, wherever we play, there is a state of security and calm for us. I hope to have news soon.”

A UEFA statement said on the current situation: “UEFA is closely monitoring the situation and is in touch with participating teams and local authorities where necessary.

“All matches due to take place in Europe in the upcoming weeks are currently planned to be played as scheduled.

“With regards to the Finalissima scheduled for 27 March, UEFA is monitoring and carefully assessing all developments of the situation in cooperation with CONMEBOL and the LOC.”

Spain secured their spot in the Finalissima, having won the Copa America back in 2024 with victory against Colombia. Meanwhile, Spain would head into the game as reigning European champions, having beaten England in the Euros final in 2024.
