Steven Gerrard turns down Rangers reunion despite positive talks

Published on

Steven Gerrard has pulled out of talks to become the new Rangers manager, according to multiple reports.

Gerrard had held face-to-face negotiations with the Scottish giants to potentially replace Russell Martin as boss. It appeared the Liverpool icon was closing in on returning to Ibrox after a successful previous spell at the club.

However, he is understood to have been doubtful that this is the correct time to take the job, despite positive talks.

A full agreement was almost reached for him to take over the role but Gerrard decided to step away from Rangers’ process of finding a new manager.

Gerrard remains open to returning to the Gers in the future, however, they are now going to have to move on to other targets.

Reports from talkSPORT claim Rangers’ sporting director Kevin Thelwell had sounded out former Everton boss Sean Dyche. But ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager, Danny Rohl, has held talks with the club and is now appearing to be a leading contender.

Rohl departed the Owls after a crisis-filled summer that included transfer embargoes, late wage payments and player revolts.

The German left the club just days before the new Championship season started and has been unattached ever since.

Hearts boss Derek McInnes has also been considered as another possible option to take the hot seat.
