VAR Officials Reveal Why Kylian Mbappe Received A Red Card Against Alaves

Published on

Real Madrid continued thier pursuit of Barcelona for the La Liga summit with an hard-fought 1-0 victory over Alaves, a game that saw Kylian Mbappe receive a red card.

Camavinga scored the decisive goal but Real Madrid will be without Mbappe for at least three matches after the France International straight red card. Mbappe was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Antonio Blanco in the 37th minute of the match.

The conversation between VAR officials and the referee has now shed more light on why the former PSG forward was shown the exit.

As observed from the incident, referee Cesar Soto Grado initially allowed the play to continue and did not issue an immediate card for the incident. However, he was quickly alerted by the VAR team. In the audio recording, VAR official Gil Manzano can be heard advising him,

“Cesar, Cesar, I recommend you come to the monitor because of a potential red card.”

As the referee walked over to the screen to assess the situation, tensions rose, and after watching the replay, Soto Grado calmly concluded,

“Okay, let me have it. The impact is high. Okay. The impact is high, it’s intense, there’s twisting, it’s a red card. I’ll take the yellow card off him and I’ll give Kylian Mbappe a red card.”

Mbappe’s absence will be a huge miss for Carlo Ancelotti. The Frenchman has been able to shake off his unimpressive start to the season by scoring goals week-in week-out.

The Frenhcman could be out and based on the level of aggression and the danger involved in the tackle, it is safe to say that he could face a two-match suspension.

However, recent reports have indicated that the RFEF Disciplinary Committee might just reduce the punishment to just one match, but that depends on how the incident is further assessed.
