Virgil van Dijk breaks silence on Liverpool future amidst contract drama

Published on

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has clarified his contract situation at the club as various reports continue to link him with a move away from Anfield.

Van Dijk has just nine months left on his current contract and there are reports Saudi Arabia clubs are monitoring his situation so they can propose an offer in January.

However, seems Van Dijk is ready to negotiate his stay at Anfield, as Liverpool chiefs feel the heat to tie down their star defender along with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Van Dijk has his eyes set on leading the Dutch nationalteam in the 2026 World Cup and wants to do it while bossing the defence under Liverpool’s new gaffer Arne Slot.

The 33-year-old said: “At both teams I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader!

He went on to say: “And I certainly want to remain that for the next two years. I am human, I have emotions too. You start thinking all kinds of things. Especially just after a game like the elimination (by England) in the very last minute.

“I also understand that it came across unclear on how I stood in all this, because after the match I was so disappointed and full of emotion. It perhaps came across as if it had been my last international match. I did have doubts that night and I did hint at that.

”It’s very good that I went on holiday the next day, was able to spend time with my children, my family, which is the most important thing in my life. I was able to share it and then very quickly things calmed down.”

Liverpool fans will be delighted to see Van Dijk put pen to paper as the Reds continue their new adventure under the management of Arne Slot.
