Xabi Alonso Backed to Lead Premier League Side Following Madrid Dismissal

Published on

Xabi Alonso has been backed to take over the role of Manchester United manager just hours after the Spanish tactician was shown the exit door at Real Madrid.

Alonso was dismissed as Real Madrid head coach shortly after Barcelona defeated them in the Spanish Super Cup final. The former Liverpool star spent just eight months in charge at Madrid and will now be seeking a new challenge.

Now a free agent, Alonso will be eager to get a fresh start elsewhere, and with United currently searching for a new manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, speculation has begun over a possible move to Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick is set to take interim charge until the end of the season, with a permanent replacement expected to be appointed in the summer.

However, talkSPORT host and Manchester United fan Andy Goldstein was asked whether he would welcome Alonso at Old TraTrafford. Speaking on Drive, he responded:
“I think so.

“It would be interesting to see what the United hierarchy are doing, as they’re close to rubber-stamping Michael Carrick.

“I wonder if they’ll go, ‘Hold on…’”

Co-host Darren Bent then raised concerns about Alonso’s Liverpool ties, saying:
“I’m not sure that, with how closely connected he is to Liverpool, he’d do it.”

Alonso played over 200 games for Liverpool during his playing career, winning the Champions League with the Reds.

Various reports claim Alonso will wait until at least the end of the season before taking on a new role, and it remains unclear whether he will be offered the job at Old Trafford.
