Wemby Makes History

Published on

SAN ANTONIO — The debate is over. The “alien” has landed, and the record books are being rewritten in his image.

In a Monday night announcement that felt more like a coronation than a vote, the NBA revealed that Victor Wembanyama has been named the 2025-26 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. While the win was expected, the margin was historic: Wembanyama became the first player in NBA history to win the award by a unanimous vote.

At just 22 years old, the Frenchman also becomes the youngest recipient of the trophy, surpassing Dwight Howard’s long-standing record.

 A Defensive Black Hole

Wembanyama didn’t just lead the league in blocks; he terrorized the very concept of the “paint.” Finishing the season with a staggering 3.1 blocks per game (his third consecutive year leading the league), he anchored a Spurs defense that jumped from the bottom of the pack to the top three in just two seasons.

But the “Wemby Effect” goes beyond the stat sheet. According to tracking data, opponents shot 14% worse at the rim when Wembanyama was on the floor—a “gravity” usually reserved for offensive superstars like Steph Curry, now applied to the defensive end.

“The real struggle might have been getting to 65 games,” Wembanyama joked on NBC Sports, referring to the league’s new award eligibility rules. “But I’m super proud to be the first-ever unanimous. This is just the beginning.”

 The 62-Win Transformation

The individual hardware is impressive, but it’s the San Antonio Spurs’ team success that has truly stunned the league. Under the guidance of head coach Mitch Johnson and President Gregg Popovich, the Spurs finished the regular season with a massive 62–20 record, clinching the Southwest Division and the #2 seed in the West.

It marks the first time San Antonio has crossed the 60-win threshold since the 2016-17 season, officially signaling that the “rebuild” is over. The Spurs aren’t just a “young team with potential” anymore; they are a championship juggernaut built around a defensive titan.

The Path to the MVP

With the DPOY trophy secured, all eyes now turn to the MVP announcement next week. Wembanyama is a finalist alongside reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokić.

If Wembanyama were to win, he would become:

  1. The youngest MVP in history (beating Derrick Rose).

  2. The third player ever to win MVP and DPOY in the same season (joining Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon).

Whether or not he takes home the MVP, “Wemby” has officially entered the inner circle of the NBA’s elite. He joins Alvin Robertson, David Robinson, and Kawhi Leonard as the only Spurs to win Defensive Player of the Year, but he is the only one to do it while leaving no doubt in the minds of a single voter.
