Courtois reveals why Endrick ended up with ‘Bobby’ nickname from Real Madrid players
Brazilian forward Endrick has started his adventure at Real Madrid in good form, putting up impressive performance whenever he’s called upon by Carlo Ancelotti.
Endrick arrived at Los Blancos from Brazilian side Palmeiras, putting pen to paper on a six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu. The 18-year-old striker made history early on in his Real career, becoming the youngest player to score on his La Liga debut for the club.
He followed that record with another one in the Champions League. Endrick scored in the 3-1 victory over Stuttgart, becoming Real’s youngest ever goalscorer in the competition.
Since his arrival in Madrid, he has been given the perhaps unusual nickname for a Brazilian of ‘Bobby’. This was a nod to the late great Sir Bobby Charlton, a survivor of the Munich Air Disaster in 1958 which decimated the Busby Babes.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, has now given the true reason behind the Brazilian being given the ‘Bobby’ moniker.
Speaking to streaming star Ibai Llanos, the goalkeeper said: “He told me that he had been misinterpreted, that what he wanted to refer to had been changed a bit, or something like that.
“I asked him about it one day and he told me that he hadn’t given that answer, that later the video was changed as if he said that he was his idol.”
Sir Bobby won three league titles and the European Cup during his playing career at Old Trafford, and was part of the 1966 England squad which won the World Cup that year.
Sir Bobby passed away in 2023 at the age of 86.
