San Siro stripped of hosting 2027 Champions League final
The 2027 Champions League final will be moved to a new stadium after the San Siro was stripped of its hosting privileges.
San Siron was set to host the 2027 showpiece for the first time since 2016 when Real Madrid were victorious over Atletico Madrid. However, following UEFA’s Executive Committee meeting in Prague on Tuesday, it has been decided that a new venue will be found.
The decision comes after the Municipality of Milan failed to guarantee that the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza would not be affected by planned renovations.
A statement read: ‘Municipality of Milano could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings would not be affected by refurbishment works’.
UEFA added that the new venue will be named by June 2025. The next two Champions League finals are being played at Bayern Munich’s stadium and the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, respectively.
The San Siro is set to undergo a major facelift in the coming years, with AC Milan and Inter Milan both supporting the plan to renovate the stadium. The iconic venue, which boasts a capacity in excess of 75,000, is set to undergo a process of modernisation ahead of Euro 2032.
Italy are bidding to co-host the tournament along with Turkey and it has been determined that the San Siro will need to be renovated in order to stage matches.
