UEFA release statement as fan dies during Portugal victory over Spain

Portugal defeated Spain on penalties to win the 2025 Nations League but while there were celebrations on the pitch, a fan lost his life off the pitch.
UEFA have confirmed that a spectator died during Sunday’s Nations League final clash between Portugal and Spain at the Allianz Arena. According to multiple reports, the supporter in question fell from the second tier of the main stand onto the seating area below during the final minutes of the game.
Certain commentators noted the incident during their live broadcast, including those from Denmark, before paramedics rushed to treat the spectator. But despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person could not be revived.
“There was a medical emergency at the Munich arena, and despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away at 00:06 (CET),” UEFA’s statement read, per ESPN. “Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time.”
German publication Bild, per @iMiaSanMia on X (Twitter), added: “During the first half of Portugal vs Spain extra-time, a German fan fell about eight meters from the Allianz Arena upper tier onto the press box, landing in Block 103. The man received emergency treatment from medical personnel but sadly passed away after midnight.”
Speaking after the match, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente offered his sympathies. He said: “I want to express my condolences to the family of a fan who has died. That has made us realise what is important in life.”
Portugal’s Nuno Mendes, who was handed the Man of the Match award, added: “I would like to express my condolences to the family of the fan that died. It casts a pall on our victory today.”
