Atletico Madrid proved who is more superior on the pitch as they dispatched Girona 3-1 in a La Liga clash on Saturday.
Girona have been the surprise of the season, slugging it out with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for a place in the top three.
However, things has changed in recent weeks with the Girona team running out of steam. They’ve lost four consecutive matches away from home.
Antoine Griezmann ensured it was five consecutive matches as he scored twice in a match that Girona scored first.
Atletico Madrid fans were left stunned after La Liga top-scorer Artem Dovbyk netted his 17th goal of the season before Atletico took control of the match.
Their dominance paid dividends when Griezmann scored from the penalty spot in the 34th minute. Six minutes into stoppage time before the break, Angel Correa put Diego Simeone’s team in front with a well placed header.
Atletico Madrid doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half when Griezmann pounced on a loose ball to unleash a strike that went in off the crossbar.
With the win, fourth-placed Atletico moved to 61 points, four behind Girona who are currently occupying the third spot.
