Brentford’s Igor Thiago Makes Premier League History

Brentford forward Igor Thiago has topped Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Martinelli and Matheus Cunha to make Premier League history.

Thiago has been in top form for Brentford this season and has now become the highest-scoring Brazilian in a single English top-flight campaign. He has taken his tally of goals in 2025-26 to 16 and has shown he can score more.

The Brazilian forward bagged a double on Wednesday night as Brentford defeated Sunderland 3-0.

Thiago in the process overtook former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino, Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli and Matheus Cunha — the former Wolverhampton forward now at Manchester United (2024-25) — who all had 15 goals in a single Premier League campaign.

After seeing Thiago hit 29 goals for Belgian outfit Club Brugge in the 2023-24 campaign, Brentford put a club-record transfer deal in place that saw the South American head to west London for £30 million ($40m).

He did not make his debut for the Bees until November 2024, having picked up a meniscus problem during a pre-season outing against AFC Wimbledon.

A stop-start first year with Brentford delivered just eight Premier League appearances – following further knee trouble – and no goals. It was, however, apparent that he possessed the physical qualities to trouble any opposition defence.

However, the recent departure of Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa means Thiago is in his first season as Brentford’s first-choice striker.

He has now taken the chance and would be hoping this helps him get a place in the Brazil squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico this year.
