In candid remarks addressing the move, the two-time Finals MVP made it clear that his homecoming wasn’t about hastily assembling a superteam or ring-chasing on the back end of his illustrious career.
Prioritizing Family and Familiarity Over “Championship Chasing”
While contending franchises across the league—including reported interest from the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves—weighed potential trade packages and contract extensions, Leonard exercised control over his destination with one year remaining on his deal.
For Leonard, the decision ultimately came down to personal comfort and lasting ties to the city that embraced him during his historic 2018–19 run:
“I’m not really championship chasing, trying to find the best team I could win. I didn’t want to put on a thousand jerseys,” Leonard shared in an interview with the Raptors’ Open Gym series. “The city took a liking to my family. I took a liking to the city. Really enjoyed it.”
To clear structural hurdles and force the trade across the finish line, Leonard notably waived his entire 15% trade kicker worth $7.45 million, ensuring Toronto could execute the deal while staying clear of prohibitive apron restrictions.
