Omar Marmoush breaks Lionel Messi record, puts clubs on high alert

Omar Marmoush has sent a clear message to top clubs across Europe after equalling a record previously held by Lionel Messi.

Marmoush has been in great form this season and this has seen him linked with top clubs across Europe.

The Eintracht Frankfurt star has scored 14 goals with 10 assists in all competitions for the Bundesliga side this season. It’s that form that has led to the Egypt international being linked with a move away from the Bundesliga club, with Bayern Munich and Liverpool supposedly interested.

Sunday saw Marmoush get his 14th goal of the season in a 3-2 win over Stuttgart. The 25-year-old found the back of the net with a sublime free-kick that beat Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nubel.

In the process, Marmoush equalled a record that was previously set by Messi. The Frankfurt star’s goal against Stuttgart was the third time that he scored from a direct free-kick in as many competitive matches, according to Opta.

Marmoush had previously scored free-kicks against Bochum in the Bundesliga and Slavia Prague in the Europa League. The last time a player scored a direct free-kick in three successive matches was Messi for Barcelona across March and April of 2019.

Various report have claimed that Frankfurt may need an offer worth up to €60 million (£50 million) to allow Marmoush to leave the club either in the January transfer window or next summer.

Surprisingly, Marmoush was signed on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 following his exit from Wolfsburg.
