Arsenal confirms the extent of Gabriel injury

Arsenal have confirmed that defender Gabriel has been ruled out for the rest of the season in a devastating injury blow for the Gunners.

Gabriel will undergo surgery on his hamstring injury sustained against Fulham on Tuesday night and Arsenal are hoping he will be fit for the start of next season. This latest development serves as a huge blow for Arsenal ahead of their Champions League quarter final with Real Madrid.

The Brazil centre half also have to sit out the remaining games of Arsenal’s Premier League season in what has been an injury-ravaged campaign.

Arsenal said in a statement about Gabriel: “Further to being substituted during our match against Fulham on Tuesday, we can confirm that Gabriel Magalhaes has sustained a hamstring injury which requires surgery.

“Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days, and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the aim to be ready for the start of next season. Everyone at the club will be fully focused on supporting Gabi to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”

Gabriel is the third Arsenal player this season to require surgery on a hamstring injury after Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz. Saka was out for just over three months and made his first team return on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Havertz suffered his hamstring injury while on Arsenal’s Dubai mid-season break to leave the Gunners without a recognised centre forward in the squad.

Martin Odegaard, Ben White and Gabriel Jesus are among others who have had significant lay-offs while last summer’s signing Riccardo Calafiori has missed weeks with different injury issues.
