Xabi Alonso managing Real Madrid at the Club World Cup now a possibility

Real Madrid are still on course to win a treble this season but a 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal clash means they have to do it the hard way.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team saw their treble dream hit the rock following a shock defeat at home to Valencia in the Spanish La Liga and away at Arsenal. This latest development have seen the future of Ancelotti up in the air.

Questions have been asked about manager Carlo Ancelotti and his future at the club all through the season and they have only grown louder now.

Latest report from journalist Ramon Alvarez (h/t RM4Arab) now claims that it is not entirely ruled out that Real Madrid will have a new manager – Xabi Alonso – going into the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA this summer.

Alonso, currently the manager of Bayer Leverkusen, has been highlighted as the successor to Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu for quite some time now.

Though Bayern Leverkusen are not willing to part ways with their manager, Real Madrid are hoping they can convince the former Liverpool midfielder to join a club he also represented as a player.

Real Madrid are not a team to write off, however, considering the overall performances of the team this season, even trophies might not guarantee Ancelotti’s continuity.

As such, the possibility of Alonso taking over the reins, as early as the FIFA Club World Cup starting in June, very much exists on the table.

However, any decision will not be made right now and Real Madrid will wait until the rest of the season plays out.
