Aitana Bonmati becomes highest-paid player in women’s football

Barcelona have announced that Aitana Bonmati has officially penned a new deal with the club until 2028.
Ballon d’Or holder Bonmati joined Barcelona’s youth setup in 2012 and the midfielder has risen up through the ranks as many before her. She has grown to become an important figure in the team, helping Barca win the league and the Women’s Champions League.
Bonmati’s current contract was set to expire in the summer of 2025, and as such the Catalan side have now tied her down to a new deal until 2028 amid interest from clubs for the Ballon d’Or winner.
Bonmati’s agent Cristian Martin recently claimed that WSL champions Chelsea were ready to trigger her €3 million (£2.53m/3.32m) release clause – to make her the most expensive signing in the history of women’s football.
However, Bonmati turned down the approaches by Chelsea to stay in Catalonia.
According to ESPN, Bonmati’s new contract with Barcelona has now made her the highest-paid female footballer in the world.
While the salaries of players are not revealed in the women’s game, the report has claimed that Bonmati will now be paid wages exceeding anything seen in the game.
