‘He has not been consistent’: Barcelona star De Jong attacked by Dutch legend

FC Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has been attacked by Netherlands legend Wesley Sneijder who claimed he is not consistent with his performance.

De Jong has faced series of criticism in his career and this looks like a trend that will continue until he calls time on his career.

2010 FIFA World Cup finalist Wesley Sneijder criticized Barcelona’s $81 million signing from Ajax while appearing on the television talk show De Oranjezomer.

“You can’t expect Frenkie to pick up the ball from Virgil van Dijk, dribble everyone all over the pitch and then shoot into the net or give an assist, you just can’t expect that,” Sneijder explained.

He also said that De Jong is not a ’10’ at all, and more of a ‘6’ in his displays.

“Sometimes we forget in Holland that Frenkie is more of a ‘6’ and a corrector, who should be a connection player,” Sneijder analysed, while seeming to agree with his detractors.

“Frenkie has not been consistent enough in recent years,” Sneijder stated. “He had a fantastic year at Ajax, which earned him a ‘very nice’ transfer. But if you look at the last few seasons, Frenkie has also been injured very often and that eats you up.”

Sneijder’s criticism is coming just days after Euro 88 winner Ruud Gullit critised De Jong, calling him a “ghost”.

“I’ll say something to Frenkie,” Gullit said. “I started at Feyenoord as a right winger, but then Johan Cruyff told me: ‘Ruud, you have to improve your teammates. I never understood it. But do you know why he told me that? Because when you improve your teammates, you always play well.”

“If you look at Frenkie de Jong at the last World Cup, he was like a ghost! He has to take matters into his own hands,” Gullit demanded.
