Brentford Make Diouf Their Fifth Summer Signing in £40m Deal

Brentford have completed the signing of West Ham defender El Hadji Malick Diouf in a deal that could reach £40m.

The 21-year-old Senegal international has agreed a five-year contract with Brentford, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement for another 12 months.

The transfer will see Brentford pay £35m upfront, while a further £5m is available in performance-related add-ons.

Diouf featured in West Ham’s opening Championship match against Burnley but was left out of the squad for their next two fixtures as negotiations over his future progressed.

The left-back had been identified as Brentford’s main defensive target during the summer, although talks initially stalled before the clubs returned to negotiations earlier this week.

The move gives Diouf an immediate return to the Premier League after West Ham were relegated last season.

It also represents a significant profit for West Ham, who signed the defender from Slavia Prague for £19m just a year ago.

Diouf made 34 appearances for West Ham last season, registering five assists during his debut campaign in England.

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews believes the young defender has plenty of potential to develop further.

“He’s a player that fits our ideal age profile, with lots of room to still develop,” Andrews said.

Diouf revealed that conversations with Andrews played a major role in convincing him to make the switch, with the manager outlining how he could continue improving at Brentford.

The Senegalese defender also set his sights high when asked about his ambitions at his new club.

“Why not win the league?” Diouf said.

The defender becomes Brentford’s fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Callum Wilson, Mamadou Sangare, Jannik Schuster and Jaidon Anthony.

Diouf established himself in the Senegal national team last year and represented his country four times at the World Cup this summer.

His departure leaves West Ham without a player who featured regularly last season as the club suffered relegation after finishing 18th.

Brentford, meanwhile, enjoyed an impressive campaign under Andrews, ending last season in ninth place and narrowly missing out on European qualification on goal difference.

The Bees have also started the new Premier League season strongly, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in their opening match.

Brentford’s next league fixture is against Leeds on Sunday, with Diouf now available as the club continues to strengthen its squad.
