Chelsea hit with hefty fine after setting unwanted record against Newcastle

Chelsea continued their good form under Enzo Maresca on Sunday afternoon when they defeated Newcastle United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer was once again instrumental for the London club who put behind the defeat against Liverpool last time out to continue their push for European football.

However, Chelsea during the match set an unwanted record and will now be forced to pay an hefty fine. Chelsea against Newcastle became the first team in Premier League history to receive six or more yellow cards in three games in one season.

This unwanted record will now see Chelsea hit with a £75,000 fine.

Chelsea during the match had a series of run-ins with referee Simon Hooper. A total of six players, as well as manager Enzo Maresca, were booked by Hooper.

Defender Wesley Fofana went into the book after just 11 minutes before Romeo Lavia followed him soon after the break.

Noni Madueke followed before Robert Sanchez and Pedro Neto were booked in quick succession in the final 10 minutes. To wrap things up, both Maresca and Christopher Nkunku were shown a yellow in injury time.

The Blues latest record comes after games against Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest where Chelsea also saw six or more players booked. The FA handed out a £25,000 fine after the win over the Cherries in September

That was then upped to a £50,000 fine after the Forest clash.

In a statement, the FA said: This will be a £75k fine for Chelsea for 6+ cautioned in today’s game (third multi-participant misconduct of the season).”

Chelsea will have no issues with the punishment but Enzo Maresca will be eager to see his side more disciplined as the season kicks on.
