FA Cup fifth round draw: Man Utd face familiar foe, City to revenge Liverpool loss

The FA Cup fifth round draw has been made as Premier League clubs slug it out with other English clubs for the prestigious FA Cup.

Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool were the biggest casualties of the last round with Plymouth Argyle beating Arne Slot’s side. The Championship’s bottom side edged to a 1-0 win over Arne Slot’s Reds at Home Park, courtesy of Ryan Hardie’s second half penalty.

Plymouth will now continue their adventure in the competition with a trip to Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have been handed another all-Premier League home tie, with Fulham the visitors to Old Trafford, while Newcastle United will entertain Brighton & Hove Albion in another mouth-watering clash.

The eight FA Cup fifth round matches will be played on the weekend beginning Saturday 1 March, with replays again off the table.

However, unlike the forth round where Video Assistant Referees (VAR) was not in used, the technology will be in place for the fifth round tie.

“Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will only be used in the 2024-25 from the Fifth Round onwards,” an FA statement confirmed earlier in the season. “It has been agreed that VAR will be utilised for every match in the Fifth Round of the competition through to the Final at Wembley Stadium, and will not be in operation for the Third and Fourth Rounds.

“VAR has only been used in the Emirates FA Cup previously for matches at Wembley Stadium and at Premier League grounds due to the infrastructure, workforce and costs that are required for its operation.

“This decision ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking part in the same stage of the competition.”
