Inter Miami to hire Javier Mascherano as head coach

Inter Miami CF is hiring former Argentina Football defender Javier Mascherano as their new head coach, reports have claimed.

The MLS team are currently without a manager after Argentine manager Tata Martino stepped down from the position for personal reasons earlier this week.

Reports from Cesar Luis Merlo on Friday has now claimed Mascherano has agreed to become the new head coach. The former Barcelona and Liverpool defender has reportedly agreed to a three-year contract.

Mascherano is still in the early days of his coaching career, having only managed at the international level with the Argentinian U-20 squad.

He was also the head coach of Argentina’s team at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where the Albiceleste were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

During his playing days, Mascherano was ranked among the best defenders. The Argentine’s football career saw him play in Argentina, to Brazil, to England, to Spain, and even all the way to China.

The 40-year-old developed a reputation for being one of the most hard-nosed defenders of his time, and it’s left to see if he’ll achieve greater success with Messi’s led Inter Miami.

Miami dominated the MLS regular season standings in 2024 and went on to win the Supporters’ Shield. However, despite setting the single-season points record in history, Inter Miami lost to Atlanta United in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
