Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has cast a doubt over his future at the Spanish club.

Lunin become first choice while Thibaut Courtois struggled with injury last season and played an important role in Madrid winning the Champions League and Spanish La Liga.

Despite his success with the club, Lunin’s contract is now running down into its final year.

However, the Ukrainian international has revealed that he is now negotiating a new contract to extend his current deal beyond 2025.

When asked about his future in an interview with MARCA, he said, “let’s see, let’s see…. There is not much time left to find out. Obviously [I want to stay], but… Well, the only thing I can say is that everything went well with Madrid… And that it is now in the hands of Madrid. That’s what I can say about my future.”

He was pushed further on that claim, but refused to go into more detail. “Well, I said what I wanted to say. Soon… Well, I don’t know what’s going to happen either,” he explained. “If I didn’t want to be here I would have taken all my vacation, but I want to go back now and continue, because I’m in the best team in the world.”

Lunin’s contract situation at Madrid is being monitored by top clubs in Europe. With 31 appearances under his belt in the previous campaign, he is looking to have a regular role, which could be difficult following the return of Thibaut Courtois.

“I understand that everything is going to be complicated, because Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. But this also makes me better and stronger mentally. I want to play everything and be number one, but that’s normal, because that’s what all players want,” Lunin added in his interview with MARCA.
