Nigeria dealt hammer blow as Boniface ruled out of AFCON with six-week injury

Super Eagles Stunned as Boniface Ruled Out of AFCON with Groin Injury

A hammer blow has struck the Nigerian national team just days before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Striker Victor Boniface has been ruled out of the tournament due to a groin injury, leaving a significant void in the Super Eagles’ attack.

Boniface, the in-form forward for Bayer Leverkusen, had been tipped to play a key role in Nigeria’s AFCON aspirations. His powerful presence and clinical finishing in the Bundesliga had earned him a call-up, and his inclusion in the final squad was met with widespread optimism.

However, disaster struck during a training session in Dubai, where Boniface sustained the groin injury. Scans revealed the severity of the problem, and after consultation with medical experts, the decision was made to withdraw him from the tournament.

The news is a devastating blow for both Boniface and the Super Eagles. Boniface was expected to partner Victor Osimhen in attack, offering a different dimension with his aerial prowess and ability to hold up the ball. His absence leaves a significant gap in the squad, with Taiwo Awoniyi also ruled out through injury.

Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro is now faced with the unenviable task of reshuffling his attacking options. Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, and  Moses Simon are the remaining strikers in the squad, though dynamic and versatile in their respective positions, but none offer the same combination of power and technical ability as Boniface.

The injury also throws a wrench into Peseiro’s tactical plans. He had likely been building his system around Boniface’s strengths, and his absence means a potential rethink in terms of formation and playing style.

Nigeria Super Eagles

Despite the setback, the Super Eagles remain one of the favorites for the AFCON title. They boast a talented squad with experienced players like William Troost-Ekong and Wilfred Ndidi, and the depth of their midfield remains intact with the African footballer of the year Victor Osimhen spearheading the attack.

However, Boniface’s absence throws a cloud of uncertainty over their chances. Replacing his goal scoring threat and physical presence will be a challenge, and Peseiro will need to find solutions quickly if Nigeria is to fulfill their AFCON ambitions.
