Paddock Gears Up for High-Speed Baku Showdown: A Historic Saturday Race
Historic Saturday Race Under the Spotlight
BAKU — Fresh off the historic debut of the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, the Formula 1 paddock has packed its bags and headed east to the shores of the Caspian Sea. As teams set up camp along the stunning waterfront of the Azerbaijani capital, preparations are well underway for the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit.
However, as drivers and engineers pore over simulator data, one major change hangs over the weekend: this year’s grand prix is breaking tradition, moving away from its usual Sunday slot to host a historic Saturday race on September 26, 2026.
A Unique Saturday Schedule
At the joint request of local race promoters and the Azerbaijani government, the entire race weekend has been shifted forward by 24 hours. The calendar adjustment was made to avoid any scheduling clash with Azerbaijan’s national Remembrance Day on September 27, honoring those who fell during the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War.
-
Wednesday, Sept 23: Media day and team debriefs.
-
Thursday, Sept 24: Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2.
-
Friday, Sept 25: Free Practice 3 and high-stakes Qualifying under the Baku sun.
-
Saturday, Sept 26: The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix main event.

The compressed timetable leaves zero margin for error. Teams will have one less overnight window to analyze telemetry and fix reliability gremlins before parc fermé conditions lock in during Friday’s qualifying session.
The On-Track Challenge: Speed and Precision
Known as one of the fastest and most punishing street circuits on the calendar, the 6.003-kilometer Baku layout offers a brutal juxtaposition of high-velocity extremes. The flat-out blast down to Turn 1 allows slipstreaming and DRS to orchestrate breathtaking multi-car drag races. Conversely, the tight, winding medieval stretch around the old town narrows down to barely wide enough for a single Formula 1 car, punishing even the slightest miscalculation with a date with the steel barriers.
