Tino Livramento out of World Cup as Chalobah earns call-up

Tino Livramento has been ruled out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as England’s quest to win the prestigious trophy suffer an early setback.

Livramento missed the final five weeks of the season with a thigh injury but made the squad after recovering in time. However, this new injury means Chelsea defender Chalobah, who was on England’s stand-by list, might join up with the squad.

The 23-year-old Newcastle defender picked up a calf injury in training, and although the injury is not too serious, the decision has been taken that he won’t play any part in the tournament.

Livramento is now expected to withdraw from the squad one day before the opener against Croatia.

He was selected to provide cover at right-back or left-back, with Thomas Tuchel expected to start with Nico O’Reilly and Reece James in the full-back positions.

England have until 9pm this evening to announce his replacement. The deadline to replace a player through injury is 24 hours before the match is due to take place.

After the 24-hour cut-off, a team is not allowed to make any further changes to their outfield playing squad.

The only exception comes in the form of goalkeepers.

Trevoh Chalobah will now be given the chance to represent his country on the biggest stage.

The defender is mainly a centre-back, but he can play at right-back and has played at left-back before.

Chalobah made 34 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League this season as the Blues struggled.
