Wembanyama Self-Critical: “I Need to Be a Better Team Player”

The San Antonio Spurs are trailing in a playoff series for the first time in the Victor Wembanyama era, and the 22-year-old French superstar is placing the blame squarely on his own shoulders.

Following a frustrating 123-108 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals on Friday night, the Spurs now find themselves down 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Despite leading his team in scoring, Wembanyama was highly self-critical during his post-game press conference.

Hard Trials in the Lone Star State

The Spurs ignited their home crowd early, racing out to a stunning 15-0 lead—the longest unanswered run to open a conference finals game in the play-by-play era (since 1997). But the defending champion Thunder steadily eroded the deficit, leaning heavily on newly crowned two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (26 points, 12 assists) and a staggering 76-23 advantage in bench scoring.

Wembanyama put up a visually impressive stat line, finishing with 26 points in 39 minutes. While the Spurs outscored the Thunder by 4 points during his time on the floor, they were obliterated by 19 points in the brief 9 minutes he rested.

Even with those numbers, Wembanyama was quick to point out the missing elements in his game: his uncharacteristically low 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

“I have trouble making my teammates better right now,” Wembanyama admitted. “I should do better. My shooting splits aren’t terrible. I need to be more of a team player.”

When reporters asked him to clarify what being “more of a team player” looks like for a 7-foot-4 point-forward, Wembanyama laid out a clear blueprint for Game 4:

  • Facilitate and Feed: Drive deeper into the paint to force the Thunder defense to collapse, opening up cleaner kick-out passes to teammates.

  • Control the Glass: Elevate his presence on the boards after being held to just 4 rebounds in Game 3.

  • Test the Defense: “Push their defense a little bit more, to fight further and see how much they’re willing to help off of my teammates.”

“See What We’re Made Of”

This marks a crucial developmental milestone for Wembanyama and a young San Antonio roster experiencing the deep waters of the postseason for the first time. The pressure is mounting, but the big man isn’t backing down from the challenge.

“It’s my first playoffs. It was the first playoffs for many of us,” Wembanyama said. “Of course, there was going to be hard trials. It is to be expected. But now, we’re going to see what we’re made of.”

The Spurs will look to bounce back and tie the series in a pivotal Game 4 on Sunday night at the Frost Bank Center.
