17-year-old boy arrested in connection to Kai Havertz’s wife abusive messages
Hertfordshire Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of sending malicious communications to Sophia Havertz, the wife of Arsenal star Kai.
Kai Havertz’s wife was targeted by some fans on social media following Arsenal’s loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup on January 12. The Gunners lost to Manchester United via penalties with Kai Havertz missing from the spot.
Sophia shared screenshots of the messages she received on social media after the match as her unborn child was threatened.
Hertfordshire Constabulary has now confirmed that a 17-year-old male from St Albans was taken into custody on suspicion of sending malicious communications.
However, the suspect has been released on bail as the investigation continues.
While it’s still unclear what will happen if the young boy is found guilty, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been vocal about the need for decisive measures to combat online abuse.
Speaking earlier this month, the Spaniard expressed his dismay at the toxic behaviour displayed on social media.
“It’s incredible, honestly. We really have to do something about it, because accepting that and hiding this has terrible consequences,” he told reporters. “It’s something we have to eradicate from the game because it’s so cynical and dependent on the result of an action. There is no other industry like this.”
