Fernandes set for Tottenham medical as Sandro Tonali talks continue

Tottenham Hotspur are set to continue their spending spree this summer as they are set to beat Manchester United for the signature of Mateus Fernandes.

Portuguese star Fernandes has been linked with Man United all through the summer transfer window following the relegation of West Ham last season.

However, Spurs who joined the race to sign Fernandes late, have won the bidding war ahead of Man Utd.

Fernandes was prepared to join either club, as his agent, Jorge Mendes, negotiated with the rival bidders, but Spurs’ superior financial might sealed the deal for £85million.

With Fernandes set to return to pre-season with West Ham on Monday, Spurs want the deal concluded before then.

According to reports, Spurs have been given permission to book a medical for Fernandes.

Personal terms are not expected to be a problem, with Fernandes likely to be made among Spurs’ highest-earners.

Fernandes is set to become Spurs’ fifth summer signing, and the most expensive in their history.

The previous club-record signing was Dominic Solanke’s £65m arrival form Bournemouth in 2024.

Tottenham have already added Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka on free signings, and coughed up £52m for Jan Paul van Hecke.

The club could break their transfer record for the second time in a week as talks remain ongoing with Newcastle over a deal for Sandro Tonali.

Tonali has also been linked with Man United but Newcastle’s £90m asking price could discourage decision makers at Old Trafford, a move that put Spurs in pole position.
