All-female refereeing team set to officiate Serie A match for the first time ever

History will be made in Serie A this weekend as the league witness the first game that will be officiated by an all-female referee.
The Italian Referees’ Association announced that the referee crew will take charge of Inter Milan’s match against Torino at the San Siro, with the Nerazzurri still celebrating after sealing the Serie A title on Monday.
Inter wrapped up their Scudetto triumph in style by beating sworn rivals AC Milan 2-1 on Monday night. However, they will be fielding a strong squad when they play Torino.
Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi will referee the game with Francesca Di Monte and Tiziana Trasciatti as assistants on Sunday.
Caputi, 33, is already a trailblazer having become Serie A’s first female referee when she officiated Sassuolo vs Salernitana in 2022. This weekend’s clash will be the sixth game under her watch this campaign.
While Caputi, Di Monte, and Trasciatti have been given the honours of directly officiating Inter’s match with Torino, Serie A have still assigned males to the fourth official and VAR roles.
Matteo Marchetti will be fourth official while Aleandro Di Paolo and Gianluca Aureliano sit in the VAR booth.
Female referee are getting more game time in the men’s football league across the globe.
Rebecca Welch became the first female Premier League referee earlier this year, overseeing Fulham’s 2-0 loss to Burnley at home in December.
