Arsenal star reveals plan for next move after contract expires

Arsenal midfielder Christian Norgaard has revealed he is planning to return to his home nation of Denmark after his contract with the London club expires.

Norgaard joined Arsenal from Brentford over the summer in a £10m move, but has made a sluggish start to life after picking up an injury in pre-season. His only competitive start for the club thus far came in a 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Port Vale.

Speaking after being recalled to the Danish national side for World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Greece, the 31-year-old confirmed he would not play for another club outside Denmark after leaving the Gunners.

He told Danish outlet Bold: “I can guarantee that Arsenal will be my last club abroad.

“I still want to return to Brondby when my contract at Arsenal expires. My contract is two years with an option for a further year.”

Norgaard spent six seasons with Copenhagen-based Brondby, making 147 appearances and lifting the Danish Cup in 2018.

However, He confirmed that he is open to completing the full three years available on his contract.

“I would be happy to stay at Arsenal for the extra year if things develop in that direction.

“If it turns out that it wasn’t the right match, we’ll go home to Denmark after two years.”

The move across London has not proven a straightforward one for Norgaard, who has had to transition from being Brentford’s captain to a depth option at Arsenal.

He added he is proud to have returned to the Denmark national side despite that.

“I’m happy that (Denmark manager) Brian (Riemer) still sees me in a big role in the national team, even though my club situation has changed after moving from Brentford to Arsenal.”
