Atletico Madrid are prepared to move for Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne if they fail to reach an agreement with Liverpool over Andy Robertson.

Diego Simeone has informed Atletico Madrid sporting directors he needs a new left-back this summer and various names have been identified. While they could agree on personal terms with AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez, they failed to agree on a transfer fee with the club.

This led to Atletico moving on to Robertson as a target as Liverpool are close to agreement with Bournemouth for Milos Kerkez.

The Spanish giant have chosen Digne as Plan B should their pursuit of Robertson fail to materialise according to The Times.

Digne enjoyed a good campaign with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, where they reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League of the 2024-25 season. His contract with Villa is set to expire in 2026 and is yet to agree on a renewal with the club.

Atletico Madrid are currently in the United States participating in the new Club World Cup tournament and Simeone will hope to have a new left-back in place shortly after the tournament ends.
