Carrick Stays Calm After Manchester United Suffer Shock Hull Defeat

Carrick Admits United Are Hurting After Shock Loss to Hull

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has admitted the club is hurting after Hull City produced a stunning 2-0 victory on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The defeat marked Hull’s first-ever top-flight victory over Manchester United and their first league win against the club since 1974.

United struggled to create clear chances throughout the match, with Hull scoring twice in the first half to secure a memorable victory in front of their home supporters.

Former United striker Wayne Rooney felt the visitors were simply not prepared for the challenge.

“When you play a promoted team, it’s always difficult,” Rooney told BBC Sport. “First game of the season away from home, United just didn’t seem ready for it.”

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer suggested a lack of fitness may have contributed to United’s disappointing performance, arguing that the team did not appear prepared for a full match of intense, high-energy football.

Carrick, however, does not believe fitness was the main problem.

United captain Bruno Fernandes pointed towards their defensive approach, particularly the way they allowed Hull to have too much possession early in the game.

“We give too much of the ball to them,” Fernandes said. “We need to press a little bit more, be more aggressive.”

He also highlighted set-pieces as an area that needs improvement after Hull successfully exploited situations the home side had specifically worked on before the match.

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic had identified set-pieces as an area where his team could cause United problems during his preparations for the game.

Carrick Refuses to Panic

Despite the disappointing result, Carrick has maintained a composed public image and insists the defeat should not lead to an overreaction.

“It’s just one game, we’re disappointed we haven’t won,” Carrick said. “We’ve got to soak it up and come back stronger.”

The manager’s calm approach is a noticeable contrast to the more emotional style associated with former United boss Ruben Amorim.

However, Carrick made it clear that his relaxed appearance should not be mistaken for a lack of disappointment.

“I’m talking to you quite calm,” he said after the match. “But I’m not exactly calm inside and enjoying the day.”

Carrick acknowledged that the result hurts everyone at the club, but believes there is no reason to allow the defeat to create unnecessary chaos.

The loss was particularly significant because it made Manchester United the first side to lose their opening Premier League game against a newly promoted team.

United now have the opportunity to respond when they face another promoted side, Ipswich Town, at Old Trafford on 30 August.

Carrick also rejected the suggestion that United had been handed an easy start to the season.

The club has already agreed a £70m deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, providing further reinforcement for Carrick’s squad.

“I understand the responsibility I’ve got,” Carrick said. “We’ve lost today and there’s questions to be asked. But it doesn’t mean everything’s wrong. It doesn’t make me do things differently.”

Carrick will now hope his players can respond quickly against Ipswich and put the shock defeat at Hull behind them.
