Messi Fined for Slapping Opponent During MLS Draw

Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer after an incident involving Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw.

Messi became involved in a heated exchange with Sullivan late in the match after appearing to believe the Philadelphia player had elbowed him shortly after he had played the ball.

The 39-year-old then slapped Sullivan on the back of the head, prompting an angry response from the Union midfielder. The referee quickly intervened to prevent the confrontation from escalating.

MLS confirmed that Messi had been fined, although the league did not disclose the amount of the penalty.

The incident was one of several heated moments during a physical encounter between Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union.

Miami defender Ian Fray was also fined after grabbing Sullivan around the neck following a collision inside the penalty area. Sullivan had gone to ground during the incident before another confrontation developed between the players.

Tempers continued to flare late in the match, with Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan both sent off during stoppage time.

Cavan Sullivan’s one-match suspension was later overturned following a review of the incident.

Despite the controversy, Messi scored Inter Miami’s second goal at Subaru Park, marking his first goal since returning from Argentina following the death of his father, Jorge Messi.

Jorge Messi, who also served as his son’s agent, died aged 68 following a long illness. After his father’s death, Messi suggested that he may not have much longer left in his professional playing career.

Inter Miami currently sit second in the Eastern Conference, seven points behind league leaders Nashville.

Messi has since returned to Miami after attending his father’s funeral in Argentina, with the club continuing its MLS campaign.
