Chelsea hire ex-Brighton coach to Liam Rosenior’s backroom team

Chelsea have announced the appointment of former Leeds and Brighton shot-stopper Casper Ankergren as a temporary goalkeeper coach.

It is understood that Ankergren will help out with training Robert Sanchez and the other Chelsea first-team goalkeepers until the end of the season while a full-time member of staff takes time off work to recover from surgery.

Ankergren is an experienced goalkeeper coach whose last job saw him form part of Graham Potter’s backroom staff as the keeper coach at West Ham until Potter’s sacking in September.

The 46-year-old Dane will assist lead goalkeeper coach Ben Roberts. The pair worked together following Ankergren’s retirement in 2017 when he stayed on at the time to assist Roberts as part of the coaching staff at Brighton.

Roberts is Chelsea’s head of global goalkeeping but takes on coaching responsibilities as well as scouting potential future shot-stoppers at the west London club.

Before joining West Ham’s coaching staff under Potter in July 2025, Ankergren served as the goalkeeper coach at Danish club Brondby, who he played for between 2001 and 2007.

Ankergren made 142 appearances for Leeds between 2006 and 2010, when he moved to Brighton. He made 77 appearances for the Seagulls until moving into his assistant goalkeeper coaching role with Brighton upon retiring in 2017.
